Spain won their second FIFA World Cup title after defeating defending champions Argentina 1–0 following extra time in the final at New York New Jersey Stadium. Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 106th minute, securing Spain’s first World Cup championship since 2010. Argentina finished as runners-up, while England placed third.
The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, was the 23rd tournament and the first to feature 48 teams. Brazil hold the record with five titles, followed by Germany and Italy with four each and Argentina with three. Spain are now level with Uruguay and France on two titles. Argentina’s defeat ended their bid to become only the third team to win consecutive World Cups, after Italy in 1934 and 1938 and Brazil in 1958 and 1962.
