US President Donald Trump was rushed off stage by Secret Service agents after multiple shots were fired during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday evening. Vice President JD Vance and First Lady Melania Trump were also evacuated. No members of the Cabinet were hurt.
Shots were fired as a man armed with multiple weapons tried to breach security at the hotel lobby and was apprehended by Secret Service officers before he could reach the ballroom, city officials confirmed. An officer at the checkpoint was shot in his vest but is “doing great,” President Trump said during a media briefing after the shooting. Both the gunman and the officer were taken to a local hospital.
Authorities have identified the suspected gunman as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California. He was not injured.
On Truth Social, President Trump applauded Secret Service and law enforcement officers for reacting “quickly and bravely.”
The dinner is cancelled for now, but President Trump has called for it to be rescheduled within the next month, according to WHCA President Weijia Jiang.
The annual dinner is a tradition usually attended by the sitting president, who delivers a humorous speech. This year, approximately 2,600 people were in attendance. Attention was especially focused on what President Trump would say, as this was his first time attending — he skipped the dinner throughout his first term — and it comes during a period of numerous challenges, including with Iran.

複数の武器を所持した男がホテルのロビーで警備の突破を試み、舞踏会場に到達する前にシークレットサービスにより取り押さえられた際に発砲があったと、市当局が確認した。検問所にいた警察官1人が防弾ベストに被弾したが、発砲後の記者会見でトランプ大統領は「無事である」と述べた。容疑者と警察官はいずれも近隣の病院に搬送された。
当局は容疑者をカリフォルニア州トーランス出身のコール・トーマス・アレン容疑者（31歳）と特定した。アレン容疑者に負傷はない。
トランプ大統領はトゥルース・ソーシャルへの投稿で、シークレットサービスと法執行機関の職員が「迅速かつ勇敢に」対応したことを称賛した。
晩餐会は当面中止となっているが、ホワイトハウス記者会のWeijia Jiang会長によると、トランプ大統領は1か月以内の再開催を求めているという。
この毎年恒例の晩餐会は、現職大統領が出席しユーモアを交えたスピーチを行うのが伝統である。今年は約2,600人が出席した。トランプ大統領は1期目を通じて晩餐会への出席を見送ってきたため、今回が初出席となる予定であり、またイラン情勢をはじめとする数々の課題を抱える時期であることから、大統領の発言には特に注目が集まっていた。
