China warned its citizens against traveling to Japan, following Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s statement that Japan would intervene militarily if China attacked self-governed Taiwan, calling such a conflict a threat to Japan’s survival. The announcement has intensified concerns over Japan–China relations. It is China’s first major retaliatory step that has further strained ties since 2012, when the two countries’ clash over the Senkaku Islands set off large anti-Japanese protests across China.
