China’s exports to the U.S. fell 35% year-on-year in May, amid persistent trade tensions between the two countries. This marks the sharpest decline since February 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains. Many businesses had front-loaded imports earlier in the year to beat the imposition of tariffs. Despite the steep drop in shipments to the U.S., China’s overall exports rose 5% in May, including a 12% increase to the European Union.
