U.S. Economy Contracts as Import Surge Drives Trade Deficit to New High

The U.S. economy contracted by 0.3% at an annualized rate in the first quarter, largely due to a sharp rise in the trade deficit following President Trump’s import tariffs. Companies rushed to stockpile inventories ahead of the tariffs taking effect, pushing imports up by 41.3%, including a 50.9% surge in goods.
